1. Childcare isn’t a perk; it’s infrastructure
Take: Treat childcare like roads and broadband—essential capacity that lets families work, businesses hire, and communities thrive. When it’s scarce or unaffordable, the whole local economy slows.
Why: Reliable care determines whether parents (especially mothers) can participate fully in the workforce, whether employers can staff consistently, and whether kids get safe, developmentally rich environments. Markets alone tend to under-supply quality care because costs are high, wages are low, and parents can’t pay what quality truly costs—so programs churn, waitlists grow, and productivity suffers. Public co-investment (zoning for more centers, subsidies/vouchers, employer partnerships, tax credits) stabilizes supply and lowers friction for families.
Question: If your city could do only one thing this year, which would unlock the most capacity—permit ADU-to-daycare conversions, expand sliding-scale vouchers, offer employer matching grants for on-site/near-site care, or raise provider pay via wage supports?
If I’m wrong: Show me places where childcare is treated as a discretionary perk yet participation, employer reliability, and early-childhood outcomes are improving faster than in communities that fund and plan it like core infrastructure.
2. Fit beats brand—every time
Take: A well-fitted $1,000 suit will outclass a $6,000 logo that doesn’t fit. Proportion > pedigree.
Why: Fit governs silhouette, posture, and how cloth moves: clean chest, balanced fronts/backs, correct sleeve pitch, proper rise and hem—these signal quality at a glance. Brand premiums can’t fix pattern errors. Good alterations (waist, sleeve, hem, shape) are cheaper than chasing labels, and cost-per-wear plummets when you actually love to wear the thing.
Question: If you changed only two variables on your current suit, which would move the needle most—jacket waist suppression or trouser rise/hem?
If I’m wrong: Show me consistent scenarios where a poorly fitted luxury suit is judged sharper—in person and in photos—than a mid-priced suit tailored to the wearer.
3. When the church chases power, the gospel shrinks; when it serves, its witness grows
Take: The church’s credibility rises with washing feet, not winning feeds. Power-seeking narrows mission to “our side”; service widens the table to neighbors.
Why: Political capture rewards outrage, not repentance; it treats opponents as enemies to defeat, not image-bearers to love. Service—food banks, foster care support, recovery work, peacemaking—translates beliefs into tangible good, lowers suspicion, and invites honest curiosity about the Source. Coercion may win cycles; it rarely forms disciples.
Question: What is one concrete, nonpartisan work of service your church could commit to for three years that neighbors would actually miss if it vanished?
