Well, maybe not President of the United States. But Tom Delay certainly has aims to be president of the conservative movement.
Yesterday I was on a blogger's conference call with former House Majority Leader Tom Delay. This conference call was hosted by the Family Research Council. While I am not a big fan of the FRC, there are some good people working there including my friend Joe Carter who organizes their weekly blogger calls and manages the FRC blog.
Delay started the call by talking about his new organization, GAIN (Grassroots Action and Information Network) and his new blog. He said that his two main priorities now that he is out of office are to push the conservative cause and to support Israel. He said that "our enemies" on the Left are better organized and funded and that he is hoping that his organization can can help close the gap between the Left and the Right.
Regarding the blogosphere, Delay thinks that the Left dominates the blogosphere and that conservatives have a lot of catching up to do. I wondered if Delay is familiar with such heavily trafficked conservative blogs as Michelle Malkin, Captain's Quarters, Red State, Powerline, and Little Green Footballs. Or maybe they aren't conservative enough for him.
Responding to a question from a college student at Texas A&M, Delay bemoaned the lack of grassroots organization and youth organization in the conservative movement. I'm wondering if Delay has ever heard of the Leadership Institute, a conservative grassroots organization that has trained over 50,000 students in grassroots politics and leadership. I guess they don't count either.
The great ironic moment of the conference call was Delay's answer to a question about the funding that the Left receives from people such as George Soros. Delay believes that there needs to be much greater coordination of fundraising in the movement and that decisionmaking as to where funds should be directed needs to be much more centralized. I could barely contain my chuckles at hearing a man who would publically promote the cause of capitalism and free-market economics now suggesting that economic decisions be more centralized and controlled (presumably by a committee headed by guess who?).
One could easily have been left with the impression that unless Delay is involved in a conservative organization, that it isn't worth a hill of beans.
Not surprisingly, most of the questions came with fawning and adulation. One participant preceded his question by lauding Delay for his great humility. Guffaw!
Then came my turn at the end of the call. I started my question by letting Delay know of my long history in the conservative movement (otherwise I'm sure he would slap the evil "L" label on me and discount everything I said).
''Mr. Delay, what can you say to convince rank & file Republicans and conservatives that this party has put principle over power the past 12 years of control?''
He started with "I'm not being defensive" and then proceeded to be very defensive. He claimed that the Republican Congress has stuck to its conservative principles, fiscally and socially, over the past few years but that they just haven't communicated it well. He mentioned earmarks and basically said that all these people focusing on earmarks are misguided because earmarks represent such a small portion of government spending. (Hear that Glenn Reynolds and N.Z. Bear?)
During the conversation with the Texas A&M student, Delay took a swipe at Congressman Chet Edwards as someone who speaks conservative when in his home district but speaks a different language when in D.C. Mr Delay: that is what we call "pot calling the kettle black".
God help the conservative movement if it is led by a man who thinks the Culture War has just begun and wants to wage it harder, who thinks that the Republican Congress didn't really spend much, and who hates the idea of being civil towards our enemies, who he thinks is the Left, not the Taliban or Al Queda. Hopefully Delay's oversized ego will sink him before he has a chance to convince too many others of his way of thinking.

Wrong guy
I don't think Tom Delay was on the call, but there was probably a very good chance Tom DeLay was on that call.
When you asked "what can you
When you asked "what can you say to convince rank & file Republicans and conservatives that this party has put principle over power the past 12 years of control?"
Umm, everything?
The man stepped down when accused of ETHICS violations. Newt did the same over his Mother's comments to Connie Cheung. How many times has Mr. President comprimised his goals so that he could hope to appease the masses by working with the democrates and comprimise?
Do they?
No.
Arent we a little sick yet of playing nice with people who care less and have agenda's that do nothing but promote the destruction of our nation and constitution?
How can we fight enemies such as Al qeada when we have too many weeds in our own garden comprimising our efforts? I see and understand Mr. Delay's point of view. Whether he is or is not educated on the blogosphere is irrelevant to me as long as he ges the job done.
Let the fire breathing Dragon EATER in office. I want some Dem Head on a platter.
How about some actual facts and accomplishments...
Mr Guest,
I guess I don't understand where you are coming from..are you upset that ethics violations were enough to cause Mr. DeLay's colleagues to ask him to step down? Or is there some other reason you seem so upset?
Onto your discussion of the merit's of Mr. DeLay's leadership, would you like to supply some actual facts to back up your case that he did "everything" he could to put principle over power?
Or maybe you'd like to explain what Mr. DeLay did to "get the job done" that warrants him being the head of modern-day conservatism?
Someone is obviously not informed.
After looking at Mr. Delay's blog (done after I posted the above comment) I felt I should call attention to some misinformation that was adressed in this blog artical.
"I wondered if Delay is familiar with such heavily trafficked conservative blogs as Michelle Malkin, Captain's Quarters, Red State, Powerline, and Little Green Footballs."
If you had gone to Mr. Delay's blog site you would know that, yes he has heard of them. He has each of those sites linked on his own page.
Missing my point
You are missing my point. I didn't mean literally that Delay doesn't know about these other conservative blogs. But Delay's comments about the lack of effectiveness of the conservative blogs was quite an insult to some pretty good blogs out there. Delay seems to think that he is going to get in this blog thing and show everyone how to do it. He has tremendous hubris.
Looking at My America today
Looking at My America today versus what my Forefathers fought, bled, and died for.
Can you tell me what exactly blogging has done to accomplish anything? Maybe realising little things like that is what makes me "seem upset."
America is the greatest nation to be in and a part of.
But it is a cold desolate communist wasteland compared with how it is written in our Decleration of Independance and Constitution to be.
The only thing I see blogging accomplish is making some of us more aware of that fact, while not doing anything to change it.
I once lived in Texas until a few years ago.
Now I live in a state that voted a man into senate that went on public radio stating "there is nothing wrong with a father having his son's penis inside of his mouth" and also claiming that “And I have never met a woman, including the dozens of female midshipmen I encountered during my recent semester as a professor at the Naval Academy, whom I would trust to provide those men with combat leadership.” (pg. 148, “Women Can’t Fight,” Washingtonian Magazine, November 1979)
http://www.redstate.com/stories/elections/2006/jim_webb_on_women
And you mention ethics violations? lol
Try reading one of Jim's books sometime.
While you are at it and claiming blogging does wonders, blog jim out of senate for us?
Thanks.
Pamphleteers?
Can you tell me what exactly blogging has done to accomplish anything? Maybe realising little things like that is what makes me "seem upset."
Perhaps you've heard of Thomas Paine? The blog is functioning quite well as the contemporary pamphlet. It can serve a very important purpose in the process of constitutional government.
I can't speak much for "conservative" blogs outside the traditionalist flavours (and their positions are so aren't in the mainstream), but I know plenty of Democrats, and I follow several leftist blogs. If you do not think that liberal blogs have a direct effect on how people vote, you are mistaken. Granted, many Americans don't read blogs (or can even turn on a computer), but that information still gets around.
The only thing I see blogging accomplish is making some of us more aware of that fact, while not doing anything to change it.
Isn't that enough in a republic? You're unhappy about a politician, especially a legislator, then vote them out of office. Tell your friends to do the same. If you learned something from a blog that made you vote a particular way, or that altered your political beliefs, that blog has served its purpose. It's about information.
What blogs can accomplish
Devlin: you seem to doubt the ability of blogs to accomplish anything. You should talk to the new 4th District Congressman in Georgia, Hank Johnson. My previous blog was instrumental in helping Hank Johnson defeat Cynthia McKinney. The runoff in which Hank beat Cynthia was extremely tight and my blog helped make the difference.
So blogs can accomplish much more than you think.
Mr. Delay was accused of
Mr. Delay was accused of Violating the First rule of the House of Ethics.
Which states, “A member, officer, or employee of the House of Representatives shall conduct himself at all times in a manner which shall reflect creditably on the House of Representatives."
You would not understand where I am coming from because I am a student of history among other venues that gives my perspective a more unique view from yours.
Such as the principal of law that states the accused is innocent until proven guilty?
You seem to overlook the fact that Mr. Delay was merely accused, and has yet to even be brought to a trail. Accused of “criminally conspiring with two political associates to inject illegal corporate contributions into 2002 state elections that helped the Republican Party reorder the congressional map in Texas and cement its control of the House in Washington.”
Allegations that came from the “investigation” of the prosecuting attorney, Ronnie Earle.
This is the same man who brought charges against U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison - a Republican. Earle had her indicted on frivilous charges of allegedly misusing state telephones for political business.
At a pretrial hearing, the judge questioned the admissibility of the prosecution's evidence and Earle declined to present a case.
The man smears and misuses the authority of his own office judging by these actions.
Meanwhile, how many democrats have stepped down over Ethics Violations?
How many democrats can we all name who blatantly commit them flagrantly?
Not only violate ethics, but commit criminal atrocities? We still have Ted Kennedy in office? John f’n kerry? Want me to name a list along with their violations? Is it necessary since they are all public knowledge?
Did you ever bother to devote ten minutes time into what Mr. Delay is accused of?
For instance, Earle, as part of the DeLay case, also has criminally indicted eight U.S. corporations, including Sears and Cracker Barrel, Bacardi USA, Westar Energy, Williams Companies, and several other companies. At the time, Earle said he could prove "the outline of an effort to use corporate contributions to control representative democracy in Texas." The companies, of course, denied wrongdoing. But Earle later cleared the companies after demanding they make donations to charities he backed. Reportedly he sought as much as $1 million from Sears. In the end, Earle was said to have "persuaded" these companies to fork over six-figure donations in exchange for clearing them of wrongdoing.
Now, with that out of the way. To explain to you, “why I seem so upset.” A comment that I appreciate since it seems to cheapen what you seem to view as emotionally uneducated angst.
Our Nations Constitution is impotent, thanks to the “lawyering” of Democrats, who’s agenda seems to be to make it an inalienable right amendment that We as Americans have the right to Not ever be offended and if we are to sue or harass or demean any person, creed, or institution that makes me feel offended.
The hypocrisy demonstrated by the democratic party sickens me.
You are obtuse to ask me such a question as what did he do to place principle over power. The man was merely accused, and stepped down when others on the democratic side are guilty and ignored.
Tom Delay on Ebay....
God help the conservative movement if it is led by a man who thinks the Culture War has just begun and wants to wage it harder
As it turns out, there are many in the "conservative" movement who want it waged harder, even in our quasi-reformed denominations. Proof of this, look at the "We Can Reclaim America for Christ" ad on www.pcanews.com...Ann Coulter?
Tom DeLay: The Ric Romero of Conservatism
I live in what was his district, which is conservative; however, he screwed us by refusing to fight and left us with nobody on the ballot. So now the seat is now held by donk carpetbagger Nick Lampson. I think Mr. DeLay should perhaps lay low for a while, he's done enough damage. He'll never again earn my respect.
Of course this is the same so-called "conservative" who stated that every bit of fat had already been cut out of the federal budget and they couldn't cut anymore.
He's just a loser, he hurts us, and he needs to focus his energies elsewhere.
The Ric Romero...
Tom Delay answered several strong conservative bloggers directly and without hesitation on the issue of "having cut all the fat that could be cut" - you haven't looked up who published that comment, or the original context - or the bloggers' interviews with him on that issue. Like John Hawkins at RWN.
The entire context was that he had gone after everything that wasn't already considered UNTOUCHABLE ENTITLEMENTS - you should go to the voter sites that show how many goes the Conservatives took at NEA, and other gobbledy goop, and thanks to certain RINOS, of which DeLay WAS NOT ONE, who sided with the HANOI JOHNS, he did a lot more than you prolly think he did - PLUS his comments were reported by the same guys who splattered Bush for 3 years with PLAMEGATE and then when it was revealed that DICK ARMITAGE and Robert NOVAK were the guilty parties - tooling for the Dims, and silent all these YEARS - THEN the screeching for "JUSTICE" on LEAKERS suddenly went DEAD! When it was shown that the 3 years was all KNOWN SLANDER AND LIBEL by the DIM PARTY who as we all know, NEVER has to pay for their crimes of felony and HIGH Treason. NYT, AP, Reuters!
And you on the internet NOT DOING YOUR HOMEWORK.
HAH!
So what exactly did Tom DeLay do for conservatism?
Mr. Devlin -
I read your reply and it seems that you believe Mr. DeLay is a victim of some unseen forces. While interesting, I'm not sure Mr. DeLay's ethical problems were what Will was getting at. I believe he was asking why Mr. DeLay felt he should lead the modern conservative movement.
So can I ask you to address the questions I posed to you above?
1) Would you like to supply some actual facts to back up your case that he did "everything" he could to put principle over power?
2) Or maybe you'd like to explain what Mr. DeLay did to "get the job done" that warrants him being the head of modern-day conservatism?
Ad hominem attacks on various Democratic politicians aren't exactly the nature of this discussion thread.
So What Did Tom Do For Conservatism? To Ex Teacher
For one thing, Devlin outlined and NAMED "some unseen force" named Ronnie Earle - Tool of the outraged Dim Party Machine of Austin, Texas, that dragged DeLay through 5 or 6 Grand Juries without an indictment OF A SINGLE NAMED SPECIFIC CRIME.
Everyone in Texas knows this is because Tom got the FAIR and RIGHTEOUS REDISTRICTING of Texas accomplished ACCORDING TO THE TEXAS CONSTITUTION, from the former Dim Party districting plan for a GOP Texas.
Did I mention that he did it according tothe Texas Constitution?
Redistricting Texas according to Texas voting patterns, according to the Texas Constitutional Process is exactly what Tom did and exactly what Ronnie Earle was after Tom for.
Since he (Tom) was instrumental in taking the State of Texas away from the Dim party MACHINE, and smashing the crooked party machine of the Dims in Texas, that means that Tom Delay has done a great deal for Conservatism, by helping the entire South break the stranglehold of the Dim Party.
Helping take 1/3 of the National Dim Party power from them is no small Conservative accomplishment, all by itself!
He also provided leadership in Congress that may not have been Conservative enough for some, but made powerful GOP ENEMIES against Tom from the RINO quarter. That won him other Conservative gratitude.
You easily glossed over Devlin telling you about the EXTORTION that Ronnie Earle perpetrated on American businesses and appears to have gotten away with - worse than what Nifong did to the Duke LaCrosse players.
You are also glossing over the cases of a lot of specific Dims who have even been convicted of felonies, or that their pacs have been convicted, which are a lot more serious than the GOP members have stepped down over MERELY BEING ACCUSED of. Sort of like when Agnew stepped down over being accused of his accountant ACCIDENTLY overlooking a $13,000 piece of property they KNOW Agnew told him to include for taxation, but he didn't, but AGNEW stepped down - but Bill Clinton came along not so long after and he himself forgets to list his mothers' house he inherited, and does not pay $20,000 he owes in taxes on THAT - Clinton didn't step down over the appearance of THAT wrongdoing...and all the other crimes we can mention regarding DIMS just exponentially skyrocket after that one... you glibbly announce this thread isn't about that - it might well NOT BE about the Dim felonies - BUT THEY PROVIDE THE BACKDROP and it is RELEVANT - as what happened to Tom did not happen in a VACUUM.
With Alcee Hastings, Harry Reid, various Dim Human Shields for Saddam, William Jefferson, Robert KKK Byrd, Barney Franks, Nancy Pelosi, Toady Chappaquiddick Waitress Sandwich Kennedy, and Hanoi John, Hillary of a Thousand FBI Files, Bill Vaccum Cleaner Nose Clinton of China Gate, Algore of Budhist Temple campaign funding felony, all looking on, you want to castigate Tom DeLay BECAUSE HE MADE ENEMIES BY breaking Texas out of the Bondage of the same kind of Dim Party machines as the Daley and Kennedy machines that visit people in the dead of night to give them voting instructions???
I don't know who YOU are, or what side of the aisle you are on, though I highly suspect!
But Devlin dressed you down and you aren't bright enough to have noticed.
BTW, DeLay doesn't think HE can "SAVE THE DAY" with the blogging, he isn't discounting what the bloggers for Conservatives have done - I've seen his interviews with several of them on their blogs - he just thinks he has a name recognition that can help the cause - and he is right, he does! And he is willing to spend it for the cause.
That is more than the 3 or 4 frontrunners for the GOP Presidential candidacy are doing, right now. Including especially Newt.

Man, you really need to RELAX with the capital letters. Not trying to be overly picky here, but it makes your posts really difficult to read.

Think snow.
I am amused.
Will, you state that I missed your point.
I specifically addressed several issues you discussed.
Your query to Mr. Delay was what he has done etc etc…
I think by this time the point that he stepped down from his position of power and authority for an investigation and trial while he was cast under a light of mere suspicion that is questionable at best and more than frivolous when compared with other of his peers who are his opposition. These same peers who do not surrender an ounce of their power while committing atrocious acts against their own proclamations of principal.
The fact he has done so shows that he is a man of honor and moral integrity that you are obviously incapable of understanding.
Expat, you make a similar claim.
Yet, again I also addressed your specific questions.
You asked if I was “upset” that Mr. Delay violated ethics.
I addressed this issue in detail.
You asked if there was another reason I was upset.
Also addressed and replied to.
You asked if I had actual fact to back up my claims of his effort to place principal over power.
Again and again I have addressed and re-addressed this issue.
Supported it with facts and even linked minor obscure points with references from blog’s that you seem not to be familiar with, even though the initial claim was that Mr. Delay was not familiar with them.
You asked me to explain what Mr. Delay did to “get the job done.”
Again, addressed and explained only one of his many accomplishments which happens to be the one that also covers the issue raised that he does place ethics and principal over power.
Now, I did not realize that Mr. Delay was attacked by unseen forces.
I was under the impression that everyone else along with myself noticed that he was arrested and indicted on charges and has had his mug shot taken over this nonsense?
I was not under the impression that people were clueless as to the hubris a prosecutor would have to wield his own power with such clear violation of ethics; to raise the accusation, investigate his own claims, and use potential slander and liable to malign a man’s career by indicting the accused himself with out handing the case over to an unaffiliated authority to investigate. Ronnie Earle acted as Mr. Delay’s judge, jury, and executioner.
I guess that to you, this is an “unseen force.” Despite how clearly I pointed out the obvious.
See, I missed the nature of this discussion thread. I did not realize that this thread was for the purpose of Ad hominem attacks against a specific conservative politician.
My mistake, I should have realized when this was a thread where, “Left meet’s Right” that it is where the Left ignores everything on the right and uses a blanket smear to claim that I made Ad hominem attacks against various politicians when I stated what violations that various democratic politicians made that are on public record.
Hey, I did not even mention Bill “I-did-not-have-sexual-relations-with-that-woman-Ms.Lowinski” Clinton.
Ok, sarcasm aside, in all seriousness now.
Your experiences in teaching in no way prepared you for the reading comprehension level it obviously requires to read through my posts and find where each topic, each issue addressed, was replied to.
I do not believe in fair play. I don’t play nice.
I am as blunt as a two-by-four across the head with my words that you by now, no doubt, take for malice.
I could care less because being nice, and fair seems to never make common sense sink into dense skulls.
If you have any NEW issues to discuss and debate with me, I shall address them.
The horse that was dead has been turned to butter with the beating I gave it in addressing all previous matters.
Here is a couple of issues for you since you required proof from me when I asked none from you.
1) since FRC has no record on their blog, prove that Mr. Delay was in the conference call hosted by the FRC.
2) Prove Mr. Delay is trying to set himself up as any type of “president of the conservative movement.”
3) Prove that Mr. Delay at any time ever violated principal in favor of gaining power and deserves the disrespect it takes to ask such a question.
No doubt, you will ignore those questions along with everything else I have said, yet again. So you will not have to worry about getting any further responses from me.
The hypocrisy demonstrated here makes me sick with amusement.
Ad hominem! Ad hominem! Ad hominem! Looks like we've got trolls
I'm rather bummed. Looks like GoodWillHinton has finally hit the big time. We've got our own group of trolls. :-(
I refuse to feed them. I hope others on this board understand why some of my fellow bloggers might refer to folks like this as right-wing nutjobs.
Ok, one little morsel...
Mr. Devlin
You asked, "Prove that Mr. Delay at any time ever violated principal in favor of gaining power and deserves the disrespect it takes to ask such a question."
Now I shall answer:
1) After taking a lavish trip to the South Pacific, Mr. DeLay killed all legislation that would have cracked down on sweat shops and sex shops in the Northern Mariana Islands. Wouldn't a principled conservative want America's laws to be enforced? Wouldn't a principled conservative desire strong action against sex shops? Mr.DeLay just wanted the free vacation.
2) Mr. DeLay is currently under investigation for taking bribes from convicted felon Jack Abramoff by the Federal Department of Justice. It is difficult to say that is a partisan attack, when Alberto Gonzalez runs that department. Where is the principle? Look like he just liked the trappings of power to me.
3) One must wonder what a small government conservative was doing ordering Congress back for an emergency session over the very tragic case of Terry Schiavo. I understand Mr. DeLay's desire to save Mrs. Schiavo, but where in conservatism is there room for the federal government in a doctor's office?
4) When Democrats fled Austin during the redistricting fight, Mr. DeLay contacted the Federal Aviation Administration to find them. The Texas redistricting was clearly a state issue. Why were federal employees involved? Where are state's rights in all this?
In fact, the bipartisan House Ethic Committee agrees with me on this one. They sent Mr. DeLay a letter admonishing him for wasting federal resources for what was a state matter.
5) Mr. DeLay was reprimanded on a second, unrelated incident by the bipartisan House Ethic Committee, when in 1999, Mr. DeLay removed an important intellectual property bill from the floor because Electronics Industries Alliance hired a former Democratic Congressman, Dave McCurdy. This was a muscle-flexing exercise on the K Street Project. The purpose of the K Street Project was to ensure that only Republicans had any power in Washington. A pure power play. Again, I ask, where is the principled conservatism?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think
Mr. Devlin,
Upon rereading your response, you twice linked to ad hominem and then implied that were launching ad hominem attacks against Mr. DeLay.
The definition of ad hominem is:
I believe we were doing the exact opposite here. We wanted real proof that Mr. DeLay was truly a conservative. We wanted to deal with Mr. DeLay's argument that modern conservatism needs him. I have yet to see a single attack on Mr. DeLay's character in this entire thread (unless you would like to count my recent reply, but it is backed up by facts).
In fact, it seems you are the only that is "appealing to one's prejudices, emotions or special interests" in your defense of Mr. DeLay and attacks on Democrats.
ExTeach's Ad Hominem Attacks
If your attacks are not Ad Hominem, then where are the links to documentation of all your wild charges.
WHAT??? Why does anyone need to prove to the Liberals whether or not the Conservatives need Tom DeLay?
It's blatant that you Democrats already are thoroughly convinced this is so, or Ronnie Earle wouldn't have spent his colateral on 5 or 6 Grand Juries on this witch hunt to get him out of the Congress!
You sure don't waste your time attacking John McCain, Arlen Spectre, Susan Collins, Olympia Snow, or Lindsey Graham, et al, now, do you!
Again, Devlin provided a lot of information to you, that was in all the mainstream news, and you cannot refute any of it.
Liberal Trolls! BAH!
Good thing you guys have already demonstrated you don't expect anyone to take you seriously - who expects you to provide links to actual PROOF!
Who expects you to live by the standards you demand of Conservatives! SO LOL!
Clean your own house before complaining to the GOP about THEIRS.
1) Gee, sounds an lot like
1) Gee, sounds an lot like American Samoa’s issues/relations with Palosi.
2) Uh huh, and people such as Murtha and Pelosi never had any issues with bribery either huh?
2) Thank you for proving that Mr. Delay does place principle over power as he was protecting Medical Ethics. Starving a woman to death over the course of two weeks is in absolutely no way ethical, especially considering the more than questionable circumstances surrounding this case. I’ll place my five years as a medical professional against your five years as a teacher any day on this issue.
4) So… when an individual is violating state laws, that state has no right to access federal resources to aid in their detention? Omg what is this world coming to? Talk about abusing your power. Never mind that he was enforcing the law against people who were abusing it. Of course you would overlook that small fact.
People sworn to uphold their office, by ethics and constitution, blatantly shirking their duties and violating the law.
Gee, who really abused their power here? Delay for dragging the democrats back to their session, or the democrats for disgracing their office that they were elected and sworn in to uphold?
5) They didn’t name the man, The Hammer, for not getting the job done.
I don’t know what you think Conservatism is.
However, I can tell that whatever you think, you still don’t know.
I guess you think it means that it is a group of nice playing, patriotic Americans made up in large by middle class hard working salt of the earth people that will give you the shirt off their back while you steal them blind. The kind of people who will turn the other cheek, while you slap them again, and again while still turning the other cheek. The kind you can preach at to be ethical because it demonstrates how much of a better person they are, while you use every underhanded means available to accomplish your goal.
I am aware of the meaning of “ad hominem.”
” Hopefully Delay's oversized ego will sink him before he has a chance to convince too many others of his way of thinking.” That was not an example of ad hominem according to you.
If there had been none, there would be nothing for me to have replied to this blog over, there would have been no banter between ourselves, I would not be writing this post right now. However, that was the purpose of the entire article.
Mr. Delay’s character was certainly attacked when the insinuations were made that he was uneducated as to the blogosphere. Again when maligning any consideration he gives to various political groups he appears (to you) to not be aware of. Again when “guffawing” over Mr. Delay’s humility. And throughout various portions of the article. In fact that was the entire point made in the last paragraph of this article written by Will.
Study your dictionary a little more and supplement it with some books so you can learn how to properly comprehend grade school level English writing.
I am not that Man.
If I have any disappointments in Mr. Delay, or Mr. President, it is in the fact that they play by the rules more than they should.
I stated if you raised new issues I would respond.
You surprised me by answering merely ONE of my three challenges. In doing so proving that Mr. Delay is extremely conservative and will do all in his power to stand up for his principals.
You had the right idea the first time. You should really give up trying so hard if you are trying to prove me wrong.
I appreciate the flattery that feel my presence makes you famous.
However, later when reality sinks in you will realize it isn’t true.
I still don’t know who you are, but you know my name.
But mom, she started it!
Wow, that's the best response that you can come up with for the first two points? Pointing your finger at a democrat who may have done something similar? In all seriousness, what is the point of such a response? Does it make it acceptable for Delay (or any other conservative) to do such things if a Democrat has done it as well?
I, for one, do not wish to have Delay or his ilk representing conservatism or setting the national agenda. The Republican party, by and large, no longer is the party of conservatives, and Delay is a prime example of this. Conservatives believe in small government and state rights, two things that Delay has very little belief in as evidenced by his actions. I also want someone who is above reproach as a leader of the conservative movement (if such a thing exists). I don't care if a Democrat has had ethical lapses - that does not mean that I lower the standards for my own leaders.
Seriously, your arguments remind me of my students who just point the finger at someone else when I hold them accountable for their actions. That's the best you can come up with? Clearly Delay was in the wrong on both of those points, regardless of any unrelated actions of Dems.

But Mom, She Started It????
That is what happens when Mom catches TWO OF THEM at something they aren't supposed to do!
Tom DeLay hasn't been CAUGHT at anything yet BUT BEING A CONSERVATIVE. We understand that is bad enough, but to make matters worse, he broke the final hold of the Dim Party over Texas!
WHAT an overwhelming blow to the National Dim Party.
And for THAT you compare him to your Dim FELONS???
And you are so busy slandering him for things you cannot even prove to 5 Grand Juries in the Dim stronghold of AUSTIN TEXAS???? that you cannot remove Robert KKK Byrd for racism, or Hanoi John for Treason? Or Nancy Pelosi for the felony of her PAC? William Jefferson for felony bribery?
But we are supposed to condemn DeLay heartily for attracting the ire of the Dim Party???
That is a lot more like "MOM! SHE LOOKED AT ME! MAKE HER STOP IT!"
You Dims have no standards. SO LOL!
In fact, what I hear the people on the street saying is that you Dims deliberately look for felons to elect to office because honest people would not do your dirty work of Socialism for you.
That is why since Texas doesn't have near as much to worry about men in the night time from the Dim Party coming to teach them how to vote properly, the Dims cannot win any Texas votes!
EXCELLENT POST, DEVLIN
Great posting. Now, you know that there will be a lot of name-calling in store for you, after this. :)
Ahh, see I keep
Ahh, see I keep forgetting.
We are here to hold someone to a standard higher than we expect from other people in the very same position.
However, I have to disagree as to what Pelosi has done being similar to what Mr. Delay is slandered with.
1) I can find nothing stating anywhere that Mr. Delay is in anyway responsible for “sweat shops and sex slavery” in Saipan. Mr. Delay went to Saipan at the behest of the Saipan government and lobbyist Jack Abramoff. If Tom Delay was actually involved in slave trading the democrats would not have been satisfied with anything short of prison for Mr. Delay.
As a politician and authority figure that can make or break something like that, why do you honestly believe that Mr. Delay had any knowledge of anything like that happening when everyone trying to keep it under cover would do everything to distract the man with other businesses that would appear to be on the level?
Meantime Pelosi, a house majority leader of the senate, pushed the bill though that raised minimum wages everywhere except Samoa?
2) This issue has been addressed. Mr. Delay has been accused of a lot of things. As stated above I was under the impression people are still innocent in this country until proven guilty.
On a side note, what lobbyist does not pay money to the politician they are courting the favor of? Gee, isn’t that a form of bribary?
You want a leader above reproach, yet when merely ACCUSED of anything that in anyway is shaded or dirty you drop them like yesterday’s lunch.
How do you expect to ever have any leader when anyone can point a finger and conjure any lame accusation to place them in bad enough light that you will denounce them?
You imply you are conservative. You don’t seem to know what it means either.
States rights was an issue that the Southern Confederacy fought over in the American Civil War. We lost and we have a UNION. A Capitalistic Democratic Republic founded by leaders who drafted a Declaration of Independence and authored a Bill of Rights followed by a Constitution so that a majority vote controls the whole. The ideals behind what motivated these Fathers of our Nation and their effort’s to preserve our freedom are what make a person a conservative.
In either event, this whole topic has been detracted from its original arguments.
That Mr. Delay is ignorant of the bloggosphere’s accomplishments and that Mr. Delay perceives himself as the Messiah of all that is conservative.
I was initially asked what he had done to demonstrate that Conservatives (Not Mr. Delay) place principle over power.
I guess a more adequate answer would be, Liberating a terrorist regime held nation, donating a billion or so to Tsunami relief for a foreign country, pursuing and destroying such terrorist organizations as the Al qaeda and Taliban when previous administrations fed the blood and flesh of our military and civilians to them with out response. How about the fact that pretty much every mistake that Mr. President has made can be attributed to the fact he has done everything he can to be fair to both sides? Maybe those seem minor to you. Perhaps you want to site some farenheight 911 rhetoric to me in response. But those are a few of the accomplishments made in the last 12 years that had nothing to do with power and everything to do with principle that never would have been done under someone like Clinton.
If I remind you of your students so much with my “finger pointing” I pity you that you are unable to pay attention to the things they are trying to tell you. A teacher and leader should be capable of doing little things such as that since out of the five points to one of my three challenges were adequate enough for you. If it were for a grade I would have a 60% and Expat would have a 33%
I am satisfied with your dissatisfaction ^_^
I knew I'd regret it...
and I did.
No more feeding the trolls.
Suicide is never the answer, Patty
Please don't do yourself in. You can be helped with counselling, and retrained - you can have a happy, productive life. There is light at the end of the tunnel - unless you are in San Fransisco.
But good nutrition and nourishment is the key to a healthy frame of mind.
Now, I have confidence in you - you can pull through this with a little determination.
Hope you enjoyed your 15 minutes.
But now you bore me since you have displayed you are incapable of raising yourself to my level.
Begin to question your purpose here when you post such an artical that draws attention because of petty childish remarks that were made in it. Then you whine that I am a troll because I refuted each and every one of your statements and answered every question asked of me with points you randomly chose to ignore or respond to.
Why did you pick and choose your points of contention with me while seeming to ignore others?
Only two explanations that I can think of.
You are wrong, and you know it but place power over principle and choose not to aknowlege that fact.
Or you are brainlessly obtuse.
Since you claim to have a higher learning, being a teacher, that leaves you with the first explanation; just another hypocrit incapable of practicing what they preach.
You liberals
Josh's definition of "Right-wing nutjob" - someone who refers to Will Hinton as a liberal. That's comedy.
