Should Pelosi Go to Iran?
Many people are unhappy with Speaker Pelosi’s trip to Syria. Some have even suggested she broke the law. Critics include papers such as the Washington Post, so this doesn’t seem to be a partisan issue.
Now she’s thinking of going to Iran:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo, just back from a trip to Syria that sparked sharp criticism from Republicans and the Bush administration, suggested Tuesday that they may be interested in taking another diplomatic trip - to open a dialogue with Iran.
The Democratic speaker from San Francisco and Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, were asked at a press conference in San Francisco Tuesday whether on the heels of their recent trip to the Middle East they would be interested in extending their diplomacy in the troubled region with a visit to Iran.
"Speaking just for myself, I would be ready to get on a plane tomorrow morning, because however objectionable, unfair and inaccurate many of (Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's) statements are, it is important that we have a dialogue with him,'' Lantos said. "Speaking for myself, I'm ready to go -- and knowing the speaker, I think that she might be.''
Interesting. Should she go?

Pelosi has "no intention" of going to Iran
Apparently, FauxNews is allowed to just make stuff now. Pelosi never said she was going and never made any overtures to them. Here is Pelosi's unequivocal denial of any attempt at going to Iran.

The link is now fixed, so you'll see that this is not a Fox News story, but rather a San Fran Chronicle story.
And what's with people (yes you expat!) compulsivly mispelling and making up names to call those groups and people they disagree with? You may think you are being clever but you just drag the discussion down.
UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL
The reason for FauxNews
I know that SF Chronicle ran the story, but Fox News was the first one to "break" the story.
And why the FauxNews moniker? Well, because Fox News is ridiculously partisan. It "breaks" stories frequently that aren't really stories or under headlines that clearly advocate the Republican party line. This story, the hoopla over Pelosi's trip to Syria, Obama being educated at a Islamic madras, etc. are pushed by Fox when they aren't really stories at all.
I'll certainly engage in important issues, but the stuff that FauxNews almost literally makes up isn't worth the time or the energy.
Although certainly partisan, Media Matters has a nice long breakdown of Fox News' missteps and bias.
I don't watch Fox News as a
I don't watch Fox News as a rule. Drudge is actually the one who "broke" the story, but all he did was link to the SF Chronicle. It's just way too common these days to attack the messenger as a way of not dealing with facts and opinions we don't like.
Should Pelosi go to Iran?
I for one, think that her going to Iran could be a good thing, as long as it's done in coordination with the President and not in spite of him.
UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL
Confusing the Issues
There is a difference between attacking the messenger for the message, when the message is true and simply something one does not want to hear, and attacking the messenger for making up a story.
Whether Drudge or someone else originated the story, there appears to be no basis for the 'Pelosi to go to Iran' story. Once one 'news otlet' runs a story, many will pile on, so whether it is reported in the SF Chronicle or elsewhere is irrelevant. Where are the sources for the claim, not just who reported it?
And if, in this day and age, we could have a rational conversation about the strengths and weaknesses of undertaking such a trip, I would say 'let's discuss it.' But when the rumor of a trip is treated as news and used to say 'Pelosi is cavorting with the enemy', 'weakening the president', engaging in acts that damage our country' (as they did with Syria), it is too volitile of a subject to raise and not expect some very strong reaction.

Focus more on Congress and less on Fox News
I have to disagree with a few of the comments made here. I happen to be far to the right; probably so far that I no longer register on meter. But I happen to disagree with your comment about Fox News (FNC). I think the MSM is so far to the left that inevitably FNC will appear partisan even though I believe they are very moderate. But you are allowed to feel that way because PMSNBC does nothing but pander to a liberal audience ala Keith Olbermann. He spews more partisan hatred in a period of 40 minutes in airtime than FNC does all day.
I'd also like to point out what came directly from the horse's mouth and not what came out of the horse's spokesman:
"Speaking just for myself, I would be ready to get on a plane tomorrow morning, because however objectionable, unfair and inaccurate many of (Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's) statements are, it is important that we have a dialogue with him,'' Lantos said. "Speaking for myself, I'm ready to go -- and knowing the speaker, I think that she might be.''
Pelosi did not DISPUTE that statement, and noted that Lantos -- a Hungarian-born survivor of the Holocaust -- brought "great experience, knowledge and judgment" to the recent bipartisan congressional delegation trip to Israel, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia in addition to Syria.
"I find the president of Iran's remarks to be so repulsive that they are outside the circle of civilized human behavior,'' Pelosi said, referring to Ahmadinejad's past comments that Israel should be wiped off the face of the map and his questioning of the existence of the Holocaust.
"But a person of Mr. Lantos' stature and personal experience is saying that -- even as a Holocaust survivor and even recognizing the outrageous statements of the president of Iran -- it's important to have dialogue. I think that speaks volumes.''
There's an old saying: silence means acceptance. In other words when Pelosi did not dispute the idea of going to Iran could be interpreted that she supports the idea.
However, there is something called the Logan Act. While there has only been one conviction under the Logan Act and that took place back in 1803, it is still relevant. Let me point you to the position rendered by Justice George Sutherland in 1936: "The President alone has the power to speak or listen as a representative of the nation. He makes treaties with the advice and consent of the Senate; but he alone negotiates. Into the field of negotiation the Senate cannot intrude, and Congress itself is powerless to invade it." Certainly, there are disputes over the constitutionality over the act, why would any member of Congress want to conduct business on behalf of the US without creating buy-in from the Executive Branch? The Democrats in Congress cry "balance of power" yet they feel that since "they speak for the American people (Harry Reid)" they can forego any balance of power.
I wouldn't have such a problem if the Pelosi and her brat pack visited countries that we considered allies. However, why would anyone want to speak across the table to nations who want nothing more than to eradicate Israel? The Republican Jewish Coalition said it all in their new commercial, not surprisingly airing on the partisan FNC.

Funny, that supplemental war spending bill is still with Congress. And what ever happened to the Democrat's promises for 6 in '06 as they won the majority? They promised to have these to the President within the first 100 hours of Congress. To date, not a single bill has made it to the President's desk:
H.R. 1: Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendations Act
H.R. 2: Fair Minimum Wage Act
H.R. 3: Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act
H.R. 4: Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Act
H.R. 5: College Student Relief Act
H.R. 6: Ending Subsidies for Big Oil Act
To answer the question: Pelosi needs to be more concerned about her position as Speaker of the House and less on her perceived role as Speaker for the Country. I think there was a country song in the 90's with the phrase: a little less talk and a lot more action. I think that's fitting for the Democratically controlled Congress.
PMSNBC?
Expat was taken to task, and offered an explanation, for his use of the phrase "Faux News." So what's up with with PMSNBC?
