Republican Soul Searching - Perception Matters
Interesting comment from my friend Joe Carter about some possible perceptions of the Republican party after this primary season:
The level of discourse within the conservative ranks has taken a turn toward the surreal. No wonder many people (including many who call themselves conservatives) think the only answers that conservatism offers are the three T's: Torture, Tax cuts, and Throwing out the brown people.

In reading the balance of Joe Carter's editorial, I wondered if he wanted to throw in the other T of GOP conservatism which is Turning back abortion rights. Unfortunately, a candidate labeling himself or herself pro-life or pro-choice means virtually nothing these days because they will never have to exercise any leadership on the issue as far as laws are concerned. In fact, over time the discussion of a national referendum against abortion has been dropped because folks know there is no way it would pass. And, yet, many still use pro-life status as a reason to elect candidates to an office. Granted it does tell something about the character of a person in some people's mind, but I could say that I'm a great football player regardless of my talent if I knew that I'd never have to set foot on a football field. I'm more concerned about pro-life leadership that is doing something about conservation of water and reduction in air pollution. Those are challenges with which leaders can actually make it to our generation's Super Bowl.
