I keep running into various blog posts and stories like this one claiming that the media is suppressing support for Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. While I am probably more sympathetic towards Ron Paul than the other Republican candidates, I don't buy this at all.
Last I checked, the polls asking people who they thought won last week's Republican presidential debate aren't restricted to Republicans. Independents and Democrats certainly can vote in these polls as well. The polls that show strong support for Ron Paul don't actually indicate that Republicans support Paul; I don't believe Ron Paul has very much support amongst the Republican base. More likely is that many Democrats and Independents expressed support of Paul because of his stance on Iraq.
That being said, I hope that Ron Paul stays in the race as long as possible so as to have some impact upon the discussion and debate leading into next year's election. Ron Paul is the only Republican candidate willing to question the Bush doctrine on foreign affairs.
Update: Former Georgia Libertarian chairman and Ron Paul supporter Jason Pye had this to say about recent polling over at Pajamas Media:
"Congressman Paul wins a lot of online polls, but they mean absolutely nothing. I am supporting Ron Paul, not because I think he can win, but because he is the only candidate that is interested in promoting liberty at home. My support is out of principle, as it usually is.
Vote in a poll, but don't be pissed when the site hosts kick our guy out because you vote 100 times for one candidate. Just knock it off."

You have to understand. The "media" is owned primarily by those of Jewish decent. This isn't anything against Jewish people.. just a fact. Most Jewish people have more loyalty to Israel than the United States. The AIPAC lobby, which basically picks the winner of every election doesn't like Ron Paul because he is against giving so much money to Israel.. not that he doesn't like Israel.. just doesn't believe the government should be giving them OUR money. So.... long story short... Ron is being blocked by the media because he isn't playing puppet like the other candidates. They will say anything to win.. Ron will not!!

Ron Paul was excluded from ABC's poll regarding who won the debate. The other nine candidates were included in their poll. Ron Paul was only added after hundreds of emails were sent to ABC. They didn't add him after they were first notified of the "oversight".

I don't think Ron Paul being "shunned" by the media has to do with his less than kosher stance for Israel or the media's ownership being rooted in the Judaic culture.
If you look back at Paul's political career, he's in familiar territory. He has never been accepted as a legitimate Republican. Up until 1996, he was unelectable in the party and only found traction as a Libertarian. I think Paul is nothing more than Rogue Elephant: an intense, aggressive wild elephant that has been separated from the rest of the pack.
Realistically, will Paul be our next President? No. While he may have performed the "best" out of all the candidates according to MSNBC, this is the first of several debates on this long road to the primary.
I do not believe there is this mass conspiracy against the good doctor. I think this comes down to the fact that Romney, Giuliani and McCain have been the formidable front runners for the GOP and therefore they received the most coverage.
The MSM is not going to silence a liberal leaning candidate for a conservative party that they either censor or brow beat. Paul is better served running as a Libertarian candidate if he wants the votes of moderate Republicans and Democrats.

I am also in the opinion that there is not much INTENTIONAL censoring going on. I think a lot of this is just plain incompetence.
I think the MSM simply doesn't get how impactual the internet opinion is.
The internet IN GENERAL, represents people who seek out news and crave truth and real controversy.
TV news IN GENERAL, represents people who would like to be encouraged to some degree about what their opinions ought to be.
In my opinion, that implies that the internet IN GENERAL is made up of people who are more independent in their thinking, and TV media is made up of people who are a bit more stuck in party politics.
I feel that Ron Paul's overwhelming popularity on the internet is very signficant, but I think the Tube Media is basically unaware of how significant the internet is.
Again, it's more a matter of incompetence than constant and active mind control.
That being said I want to state for the record that I do feel there is plenty of active control of the mainstream media. The pentagon spends BILLIONS of dollars a year releasing information to the media that is to their liking.
Thanks for a balanced article. I am a big Ron Paul supporter and I even think he has a great chance, but I hope his following (which I think IS bigger than the media realizes) doesn't get to "mobbish..."

You're really missing the much bigger picture here. He also won the polls but there is no reporting on it. It doesn't matter that you personally want to spin the results so they don't count (with your garbage about Dems being able to vote.. and you're point is?? (Stupid)). He won. If another candidate won they would have touted it on their polls.

Being a outsider living in canada dealing with mass media manipulation is something i can blatently see, but it truelly amazes me just how blind the american public is. Ron paul is the enemy of your enemy, no not the terrorists dummies but the conglomerites which own your candidates and media. Look around why is it that everyone seems so out of touch, just look at the garbage they put on t.v. America is one of the most brainwashed nations in the world. I would recommend you to go and watch a documentary called "the money masters" I promise you if you watch this you will understand why ron paul is being censored. Good luck america you need it.
Ron Paul, are you kidding me?
Ron Paul is a fundamentalist (if not in name, in practice) Christian who wants to immediately overturn Roe vs. Wade. He also wants to strip power from the FDA and let corporations pump whatever unregulated stuff into you that they can convince you to buy. He also thinks that any Joe or Judy Average has the ability to proficiently educate their children at home. He's also anti-GLBT.
