Soccer explains the world

A friend gave me the book for Christmas, saying that it combines my two passions. I jumped right in and was amazed to see (for example) how Slobodan Milocevic's henchmen grew from the ranks of supporters of Red Star. Not long ago, I read an obituary for Pinochet that touched on these same topics, and how sporting events (soccer games) were the one place where national pride, ethnic identity, and protest over government could be formented and tolerated. I also found Foer's book timely, as it referred to the other book I am currently reading, Hannah Arendt's 'Rise of Totalitarianism.'

If you have read it, don't give away the ending. If not, read it and we can compare notes.

A friend of mine recommended this book to me, I haven't gotten it yet. It definitely sounds like an interesting read.
