Hillary Clinton: "OPEC Can No Longer Be A Cartel"

Will Hinton's picture

Not that many politicians are innocent when it comes to demagoguery and "saying whatever it takes to win". But I did find Hillary Clinton's remarks about OPEC particularly over the top.

"We’re going to go right at OPEC. They can no longer be a cartel, a monopoly that get together once every couple of months in some conference room in some plush place in the world, they decide how much oil they’re going to produce and what price they’re going to put it at."

Um, last I checked, counties can do anything they damn well please regarding the exporting of their natural resources. I also don't recall hearing about any sort of "World Constitution" that would regulate things like this.

Next thing you know, Hillary is going to call for the abolition of the law of supply and demand. Go ahead girl, knock yourself out.

OPEC is in the enviable

OPEC is in the enviable business position of having control of the majority of a commodity that is essential to how the modern world functions. Not only do private citizens needs petroleum products, but so do armies. They can do whatever they want to. HRC may argue that it's immoral to keep raising prices on us, but I don't know how she's going to go right @ opec. She can't do anything [yet] militarily. Will it be a concert series to draw attention the 'opec problem' or maybe a letter writing campaign.

I can't think of anything short of taking the group over [which won't/shouldn't] happen that would impact how OPEC works.

This brings up another issue

This brings up another issue that I'd like to get folks comments on.

There has been lots of reporting about executives of oil and gas company executives getting paid big bonuses or the companies making record profits. Some presidential candidates and those in Congress have been quoted saying that there shoud be some limits set on how much money companies and executive make.

Should there be regulation of this?

Hey Will, I found your site

Hey Will,

I found your site through a link from Daniel Larison's blog. I figure if you got linked by him you must be doing something right. The title "Dignan's 75 year plan" caught my eye as I'm of the opinion that Bottle Rocket was the highest and best of Wes Anderson and the Wilson brothers and they have gone steadily downhill since then, with a few notable bright spots. After reading through a lot of your posts, I noticed you are very similar to me in both politics and faith and then noticed you were from Atlanta too and that you attended a PCA church. I also live in Atlanta now and graduated from the "official" PCA college, Covenant College, up near Chattanooga. We've been pretty bad about church attendance since we moved to Atlanta 4 years ago. Anyway, just thought that was pretty cool to find someone with a lot of similarities through a totally unrelated blog thanks to our affinity for Bottle Rocket. I'll be adding you to my blogroll and have already added you to my google reader. Keep up the good work!

Hey Will,

Great site! I'm curious to get your perspective on John Edwards' project "Half in Ten" with the goal to cut poverty in half in the next ten years. Thoughts?
