Government Funded Music?

An iPod for every kid? Are they !#$!ing idiots?

The Detroit News weighs in on this proposal:

We have come to the conclusion that the crisis Michigan faces is not a shortage of revenue, but an excess of idiocy. Facing a budget deficit that has passed the $1 billion mark, House Democrats Thursday offered a spending plan that would buy a MP3 player or iPod for every school child in Michigan.

Wow. I’m not sure what to say. This sounds about right though:

The only responsible option is to bring spending in line with current revenues. The mission must be to expand the tax base, rather than to expand taxes, by crafting a budget that encourages growth.

We won't get there by wasting money on early Christmas presents for Michigan kids.

Poor Michigan

Michigan's employment rate is terrible, people are leaving the state, and schools are closing. These are not Christmas presents, but something to keep kids occupied and off the streets. Unreasonable times call for unreasonable options.

iPod have a lot of educational uses

Curt,

What you are missing is that iPods have great educational purposes, beyond just holding songs. My school utilizes them as portable HDs. We have kids make and upload podcasts for other students. Students in the high school download several different podcasts each week (NPR, Economist, etc) for discussion in their IB classes.

iPods are only a tool. Like all tools they can be used effectively or ineffectively. If this spending bill only allows the money to be spent on iPods, when there are lots of other glaring problems with Michigan's educational system, then it is rather stupid and short sighted.
