Good Will Hinton's Links o' the Day
National Health Insurance? - Jane Galt makes a fantastic point about some of the problems with nationalized health care.
"Which brings up one of my perennial peeves about people advocating national health insurance or any other big programme: they point out all the ways in which public choice problems make the current system suck, and then proceed to outline their future plans as if those problems will somehow magically fall away in their system. Companies won't lobby. Voters won't demand that every stupid alternative procedure they can complain about be covered, much less react to the lack of a price signal by using more of everything. People employed in that sector won't band together to keep wages high and productivity as low as possible. Bureaucrats won't shift priorities to minimizing their own political risk, rather than maximizing the level of service provided to the public. Because it's not as if those things have happened with every single other government programme ever proposed, so why on earth would we suspect they might happen in this case?"
Slush Fund Spitzer - I have never disguised my disdain for Elliot Spitzer. So I can't say that I didn't grin a little over Captain Ed's article today about the "new" Governor Spitzer.
"So much for reform. Now that he has barely warmed his seat in Albany, he has shifted his game to that of old-time politician and spoils master. He wants to pass a budget of his liking, and he's going to buy as many of his party colleagues as he possibly can to ensure it. After running a campaign that pledged Spitzer to a course that would change "politics as usual", he seems to have discovered an affinity for slush funds in record time."
What About Bill? - Considering Expat Teacher's man-love for Bill Richardson, I couldn't help but link to this post today by Daniel Larison exposing some pretty tough issues that Richardson is going to have to deal with in an election.
"His record in Congress put him much farther to the left than he is today, his record at the U.N. was basically unremarkable and his time as head of DOE was a catastrophe.
All of this will come back to haunt a Richardson ticket, should he make it that far, and the DOE tenure especially will prove potentially devastating when it comes to the whole Chinese espionage bit. Richardson boosters probably will want to not mention his time at DOE if they can possibly help it. His opponents can just keep replaying that scene from the Senate oversight hearings as Robert Byrd declares Richardson’s career finished:
"You had a bright and brilliant career, but you will never again receive the support of the U.S. Senate for any office you seek. You have squandered your treasure."
The Case Against McCain - Yesterday Mike Allen wrote at The Politico about the leading candidates for '08 and their weaknesses. (You might want to check out Wonkeette's take on this.) About John McCain, Allen wrote:
"Even though McCain is staunchly anti-abortion, conservatives don't trust him because he voted against Bush's tax cuts and championed campaign finance reform, which many activists saw as a do-gooder intervention that hurt some of their pet organizations."
Mike, can't you just pretend to be objective here? The issue for conservatives about McCain-Feingold hasn't nothing to do with conservative "pet organizations". It has everything to do with restricting the freedom of speech. Why don't people get this?

Richardson
Expat, I understand that you believe Richardson is the best candidate for the Dems. I want you to make the case that he can actually win. I don't see a plausible scenario where he gets the nomination. Hillary has too much money to lose, in my opinion, and the only possible candidate to stop her is Obama. Where is the money going to come from? Call me jaded, but I'm more convinced than ever that the ability to raise money decides elections--not only in the sense of being able to spend it but in convincing the party leadership to throw all support quickly behind that candidate (see: Bush, George W. and Kerry, John in the last 2 elections).

Sarcasm
You can make a strong point that drips with sarcasm, you can make a penetrating point that drips with sarcasm, but you cannot make a "fantastic" point in such a fashion. My follow up question to Ms. Galt is: What do you propose to make health care more accessible to more Americans? Is there truly no effective way to develop a program with adequate checks and balances that will put America on a par with European countries with a tiny fraction of the financial resources of the USA?
Oh, and Bill Richardson has ZERO chance of getting the nomination and Hillary's seems to be shrinking on a daily basis. If Obama keeps piling up money like he has this week... he's the candidate.

Richardson is the best man for the job...money is another thing
Encyclopedia-
I'll make the case on Thursday when I've got more time. For now, let me say that Bill Richardson is the best man for the job. He's got the experience and the vision to make America a better and stronger place.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the nominee. He is not raising money at the rate of Hillary or Obama. It does concern me, but money follows a winner. If Richardson can win the Nevada caucus, money will follow.
However, I'm a realist. Unless Hillary or Obama make a mistake, it is is probably a 2-horse race going into January.
DOE
Expat: so do you not think that Richardson's DOE tenure is a problem?
Dude - I'm busy give me a day and I'll address your concerns
Will-
I've got a tough teaching load today. I'm at the end of my lunch break.
As for his DOE tenure. It won't be a problem. I've seen him talk about it already. With Wen Ho Lee he was overly cautious in favor of national security. He has learned his lesson, but would still er on the side of national security again. Ditto with the concerns about lost data/hard drives (which actually turned out to not be lost at all).
A one-day story, at most. He's already dealt with them during his two incredibly successful campaigns for New Mexico governor.
Will Hinton's Links
Will,
Considering how one sided your links are, it's not really fair to the blog to call these Good Will Hinton's links of the day. These are Will Hinton's links, but the good will part is dubious. Especially, seeing how your links are used to make a case against poor old Expat.
Perhaps we should all issue a few links every now and then to give us a broad sense of the Web's political offerings. Or at least, of our own favorite sites.

Links
Dustin: you or any of the other contributors here are welcome to post links all you want. The post clearly states that I submitted it so I am not sure why you seem concerned about this. I have done this quite a few times with varying sources. I don't hide the fact at all that I lean right.
I'd be happy to get links from everybody of the best things they read each week. I think that generally people tend to focus on those blogs or sites that they agree with way too much.
Take a look at the blogroll on the right-hand column. I read each of those blogs on a daily basis. I would call that a pretty diverse group of sources.
I agree
Dustin has a good point. By calling them "Good Will Hinton's Links" it seems to imply an endorsement by the GWH community-at-large. As if it the links are OURS rather than just Will's personal choices.
I don't mind you taking shots at me; I'm more than willing to defend my positions, but to have the links that attack positions I hold with a slant that seems to imply WE ALL agree is rough.
Can we change the label to "Will Hinton's Links" or something that doesn't seem to have the endorsement of the entire community?
I know that I could post a link in the comments or my own post. However, I don't always have time to do so.
Just think of the reverse...if I posted "Good Will Hinton's Links o' the Day" and had 3 links that all supported progressive causes/ideas, how would you feel?
Expat: I would be more than
Expat: I would be more than happy for you to post "Good Will Hinton's Link of the Day" will all progressive links. Fine by my and I hope you do it.
There is a reason that each post has a "submitted by" and that is to distinguish who writes each post.
