Interesting- this one is on
Interesting- this one is on my reading list. Moving back to Tallahassee I deal with manufactured Christian culture more often than when we were in Atlanta. Strange how a few years in the big city can make you feel like an outsider.
I understand your
I understand your difficulties at finding real Christian community, and I too am quite familiar with the town. But there are great churches in Tallahassee as well that strive to keep the gospel alive and active, and places where you can be real. Without endorsing one, I would say that you should check out Calvary Chapel of Tallahassee way out on 90 (great worship, great teaching; also Wildwood Church (on Ox Bottom)-solid teaching, very loving community (however a little large for my taste) Are you related to Todd Bevis?
Yes Todd and I are
Yes Todd and I are cousins... All Bevises in North Florida are.
I go to Centerpoint- a plant that started out of Wildwood.
It is a great church.
The issue is not so much with my church but with the community as a whole. Outward appearances of piety are important.
In an Atlanta restaurant it was uncommon to pray before a meal. In Tallahassee you may get looks if you don't.
That is just an easy example.
I love Tallahassee: just realizing it can be more of a bubble than Atlanta.
I hear you, but my
I hear you, but my experience here has not been the same. This may have a little to do with your sub-bubble in Tallahassee, if you will. I live in probably the most liberal neighborhood in Tallahassee, and when I go to restaurants nearby, I rarely see anyone praying. Perhaps what you mean is that when you eat out with church friends or those who know you're a Christian, there's more of an unspoken pressure to behave a certain way? I understand that. And yes, the Bevis name is all over the area. Maybe one day I'll run into you!
How important to see
How important to see ourselves clearly. It is so great to gain some perspective on our strange predilections. We desperately need it. Thanks to Daniel Radosh for writing such a fresh, funny and frank book on Christian subculture. And thanks to Good Will Hinton for crossing borders and building bridges. We just may dig out of this hole of our own making yet....
Really enjoyed the
Really enjoyed the interview. Thanks for doing your thing Will. Wouldn't it be great if we weren't so afraid of what others thought of us? And wouldn't it be great if evangelicals realized that their political, social and cultural involvements didn't have to be limited to a few issues. I felt that Radosh even had a sense of hope or optimism that there was more going on in the Church in America than what the stereotypes suggested. I certainly think there is much more going on and that perhaps there will be a Christian renaissance in the future.
