Commenting problem update

Will Hinton's picture

I know some of you who are not registered users have had problems with your comments disappearing. I won't get into the gory technical details, but I believe that this problem has been fixed for good. In order to keep comment spam off the site, I will be moderating comments. But legitimate anonymous comments should now be working. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Why?

Will, why do you allow anonymous comments? It seems that the spam issue would mostly take care of itself if you required registration. Besides, it is nice being able to connect past comments to current ones when a certain person weighs in on a subject. I guess I just don't get the desire for complete anonymity, from the perspective of the writer or from your end. Is a made-up screen name not anonymous for some people?

There are some people who,

There are some people who, for various reasons, don't want to be identified online. Many of these are in academia or in official positions that don't allow them to put their names on comments here. I can appreciate that need and am willing to accommodate it, so long as people don't abuse it. I have no problem deleting comments that are abusive or those that are well outside the spirit of our conversation here.

I don't know why I missed this one

but somehow I did.

I'm with Alaskan Brian. Folks can't even make up a pseudonym to write? I think requiring everyone to register helps keep thing civil and allows me to track people's political preference so I better understand where they are coming from.

It's your place, you can do what you want, but I'd require folks to register...
