Christmas

This link is on Christmas on Flower Street in Kabul. The shopkeepers are happy because Christmas trees are bringing them business and helping them prosper. Christmas is nothing to them, but there are foreigners there now who need these trees.

"'I was amused when I saw trees with lights,' said 29-year-old Abdul Qader. He thought the lit-up trees were a new fad in Afghan home deco, but he later found out they were for Christmas.

"'They looked beautiful to me,' he said with a smile."

Which, if you think about, is the only really good reason to keep a decorated tree indoors at Christmas. They are beautiful. There is nothing particularly religious about having a tree indoors. It is not integral to our worship of the Christ. Jesus was not born under en evergreen. Of course, the evergreen MEANS him, in a symbolic sense; the tree that annually defeats apparent death. And the adornments and the gifts under the tree? Well, we have complex traditions and the modifications over the generations are interesting.

Here's to Christmas in Kabul. May it be a merry one for all Christians who live there, and may the flower shops on Flower Street have exponentially expanding business every year.

And God rest you merry gentlemen! Have a happy Christmas.
