Barack Hussein Obama and the new Republican attack tactic?
I don't know about you, but I didn't get a choice in my name. It was just given to me. Well, don't let that get in the way of attacking the most popular Democratic politician in the country.
Last night on Hardball, GOP strategist Ed Rogers ridiculed a potential Obama candidacy by using Obama's little-known and politically unfortunate middle name, Hussein. You can actually here the host giggle when he does it.
While ridiculous, it is a peril of running a candidate that is virtually untested. A "Hussein-moment" could be a "Swift-Boat moment" and destroy a candidacy before it even gets going.
Also, this shows that partisanship is alive and kicking in the body politic today. That is rather unfortunate. I guess we'll have to keep working here at GoodWillHinton. ;-)

The Richardson Conspiracy
Expat,
My conspiracy theory is that by bringing this up, you yourself are attempting to undermine Barack Obama as part of your quest to secure the Democratic nomination for Bill Richardson. You draw attention to Obama's middle name in the same way both Kerry and Edwards commended Cheney in the 2004 debates for his relationship with his lesbian daughter--hey, did we mention that Dick Cheney's daughter is a lesbian? :)
In all seriousness, and this is an actual as opposed to rhetorical question, what it is that you like about Bill Richardson? I don't know a great deal about him, but my vague impression is that he was an unspectacular cabinet secretary, decent though not extraordinary governor, and never saw a TV camera he didn't like (does CNN have a studio in the NM Governor's Mansion?).
Expat, make your case!

More to follow on Richardson, I promise
Encyclopedia Brown,
I appreciate the thought that I'm smart enough to strategize about this name thing as a way to sink Obama. However, like all conspiracy theories, this one isn't true.
I'll write more posts on Richardson in the near future. In the meantime, check out the Bill Richardson blog.
ps. Big fan of your books. Long time since I read 'em, but love 'em nonetheless.
This is all too typical and too be expected
We live in an age of the uninformed, simple minded voter. By now there should be no question of that. Evidence comes out over and over about it with each election. This is why all we see politicians do now is mud sling and run attack commercials and promote ideas that fit nicely on a bumper sticker. If and when Sen. Obama formally decides to run for president there won't be a single day where at least one pro-Republican radio host and at least one pro-Republican writer doesn't either bring up his middle name in connection with Saddam or his last name in connection with bin Laden. And if your golden boy Richardson got nominated, it would probably happen with something like calling him Slick Willy the Second. And it probably happens the other way too - I just can't think of what it would be McCain or Guiliani right now.
what about Edward Kennedy's comment?
There is a great soundbite with Sen. EKennedy referring to BHO as "Barak Osama, er, Osama Ben, er Obama". I think that's the best name bombing that anyone can do BHO - and it was one of the senior statesman in his own party.
I think that BObama is assumed to be a great leader before he does anything of note IN CONGRESS. His book is supposed to be good, but that doesn't mean you should run for Pres - if it did many of us would push for JRR Tolkien to be president - even though he's dead.
If having Hussein as his middle name isn't a cross BHO can't carry to the White House, then BHO has no business of considering runnning. Besides doesn't everyone know that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with global terrorism and was really a misunderstood peaceful leader whose people basked in the glow of his beneficence. Since SHussein was not such a bad guy, why not shout the same from the rooftops, like HRoddamClinton or SMichelleGellar?
In summary, this doesn't seem like an attack. Now a commericial of a white stripper saying "Barak Hussein, call me....." that's an attack.
Nice to know...
