Achtung!

Instapundit had an excellent link earlier today. I wanted to pass it along in case GWH readers missed it. It is an interesting, and I think surprising editorial in Der Spiegel. I imagine the youth of Germany must be very grateful for the US House and Senate.

You can find the editorial here: read more »

Cancer as a political event

Expat Teacher's picture

I've been meaning to get to earlier, but I don't think it is any less relevant.

We've had two recent disclosures by highly political figures that they have cancer: Elizabeth Edwards and Tony Snow.

Elizabeth Edwards is a highly involved member of John Edwards' presidential campaign and possibly the brains to Edwards beauty. She has a major role in the campaign and has promised to continue doing what she has been doing since the beginning of the campaign. read more »

James Dobson Doesn't Think Fred Thompson Is A Christian

Will Hinton's picture

Ugh! James Dobson has become a lot like Pat Robertson and I don't mean that as a compliment. Yesterday while speaking to U.S. News & World Report reporter Dan Gilgoff, Dobson opined about presidential hopeful Fred Thompson.

"[But] I don't think he's a Christian; at least that's my impression," Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party's conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

I don't know that much about Fred Thompson, but what little I know doesn't really give me any sense about his faith. read more »

Would Jesus podcast?

Expat Teacher's picture

We often don't talk about how technology and religion interact on GWH, so I hope this topic opens up some conversation on the topic.

My church here in DC is a big fan of using the most modern technologies to reach anyone they can. I'm certainly not against that. Jesus himself said to preach the gospel to all the nations. However, the more I look at modern technology, the more I wonder if they run counter to part of the Gospel message. Since the radio and television have pulled people from the public square for entertainment into their own homes, technology has progressed as a way to offer people more and more individualized entertainment and information options. The VCR supplanted the movie theater. The cell phone supplanted the fixed line phone. Even the Blackberry supplanted the desktop PC for e-mail. read more »

Another Barack Obama Attack Ad on YouTube?

Will Hinton's picture

So tonight I was checking out the latest News/Politics videos on YouTube and came across this one about John McCain. Pretty standard "anti-McCain" "anti-war" stuff until the last bit. Notice the last bit of text to appear in the video.

So is this just a copycat case following in the wake of "Vote Different"? Or is the creator yet another consultant to the Obama campaign? And as I asked last week, how in the world can the BCRA address issues like this?

Do Iranians get embarrassed by their government too?

Expat Teacher's picture

So I had this thought yesterday as I read how Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reacted to the UN security council's increased sanctions for Iran's work on nuclear weapons.

I just laughed when I read, "Ahmadinejad, in an interview with France's Channel 2 TV network, warned nations 'seeking to impose sanctions against Iran will suffer a greater damage themselves,' IRNA reported." read more »

Why People Think Conservatives Don't Care About People

Will Hinton's picture

I found this piece on Neal Boortz's website Monday entitled "Why People Think Conservatives Are Idiots".

You will remember several weeks ago I told you about one Georgia Republican (former Democrat) legislator whose campaign chairman sent out some memos and letters promoting legislation to outlaw the teaching of evolution in government schools. The letter referred the reader to the website of "The Fair Education Foundation, Inc." In this website --- and I'm not kidding you here --- you will learn that the Earth stands still in space ... not even rotating ... while the Sun and everything in the universe rotates around the earth every 24 hours. Think I'm kidding? Check it our for yourself. read more »

Chavez Marches Venezuela Towards Socialism

Chavez lays out collective property plan
.

President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that his administration plans to create "collective property" as part of sweeping reforms toward socialism...

Wherever land reform like this has been tried, it always ends up hurting the poor the most. Chavez may honestly believe he's helping the poor with his reforms, but he is only hurting them. There are already
shortages of many essentials such as food
.

The leftist leader also plans to slap new luxury taxes on the wealthy and do away with presidential term limits that would otherwise bar him from running again in 2012. read more »

Exit Strategy: Why I Supported the Iraq Accountability Act

Rep. Hank Johnson's picture

I am passionately opposed to the war in Iraq. I am committed to bringing our brave troops home and sickened by the prospect of prolonging this tragic and unnecessary conflict.

And today I have made a very difficult decision – by far the most difficult I have ever made in public service. read more »

China seen topping U.S. carbon emissions in 2007

China seen topping U.S. carbon emissions in 2007
.

China is on course to overtake the United States this year as the world's biggest carbon emitter, estimates based on Chinese energy data show, potentially pressuring Beijing to take more action on climate change.

China's emissions rose by some 10 percent in 2005, a senior U.S. scientist estimated, while Beijing data shows fuel consumption rose more than 9 percent in 2006, suggesting China would easily outstrip the U.S. this year, long before forecasts.

China received a special dispensation from the Kyoto protocols because their economy is relatively young. But China is so big and is growing so fast that it won't be long before their emissions dwarf those of the rest of the world, even on a historical scale.

The YouTube 'Vote Different' Ad and Freedom of Speech

Will Hinton's picture

There has been a tremendous amount of discussion over the YouTube video ad attacking Hilary Clinton. I'm not going to rehash the story nor discuss the issues of who did it and why. More than enough has been said about an ad that actually didn't say anything.

John McCain's Flip Flopping

Will Hinton's picture

Ryan Sagar has a nice post this morning at The New York Sun about John McCain and his explanation for the Republican's defeat at the polls in November.

Last week McCain placed the blame on profligate spending by the Republican Congress. This week he is blaming the Club for Growth, a fiscally conservative 527.

Huh? Which is it John? Too much fiscal conservatism or too little?

I'm sure that little skirmish in Iraq had no impact upon the elections in November. read more »

Businesses call for environmental regulation

Expat Teacher's picture

One of the most common critiques of raw capitalism is that it doesn't adequate deal with some of the environmental externalities from products and services. For example, you are not charged the cost of disposing of your Coke bottle or your blue jeans when you purchase them. Often times, when these items are produced in 3rd world countries, the producer didn't have to pay for disposing any of the products required to make them because he could just dump them back onto the land, river, air, etc. Therefore the producer can provide a product/service to you cheaper than the actual cost of producing it. read more »
