Michael Gerson on the new evangelicalism

I posted this at NLT, with a link to Gerson's NEWSWEEK piece. I thought that it might be of interest to some GWH readers and bloggers as well (that means you, Will!):

Is there a home for this Michael Gerson in the post-’06 election Republican Party, or in the conservative movement?

The Next John Kerry?

According to CNN, out-going Iowa governor Tom Vilsack is now the first democrat to throw his hat in the ring for the 08 presidency.

That's out-going governor, which is not the same as being an outgoing governor--you know, the kind of governor who plays saxophone at parties and goes on the Tonight Show. That's not Vilsack.

Bill Richardson or Hillary Clinton

Both Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson won an overwhelming re-election on Tuesday night.

Please compare and contrast the two acceptance speeches. Let me know, which one is a more charismatic speaker? Which one offers a more compelling vision of the future?

Nancy Pelosi Wants Total Party Discipline

Rep. Nancy Pelosi plans to sideline colleagues who are hawkish on national security in the Democratic leadership in the House.

Democratic Party sources said as House Speaker, Ms. Pelosi plans to block moves that would place hawks into important chairmanships. The sources said a key casualty would be Rep. Jane Harman, a six-term member of Congress who has cooperated with Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee.

"Nancy Pelosi wants total party discipline," a source in the Democratic Party leadership said. "If you played ball with the Republicans during this session, then you're not going to be given an important chair in the next session."

I really hope that this report is false. This would be doing the very thing that Republicans have done over the past six years. I really hope that for the first time in a long time, that a politician who speaks about bipartisanship actually means it.

Let me get this straight

During the weeks leading up to the elections I heard conservative talk radio hosts complaining about the Democrats. They said the Dems have been bitter for 12 years and still think they have a right to be in power. Has it dawned on any of those same hosts that the Republicans lost control for the very same reason?

Awake, My Soul

Update: I hope all of you in Georgia will tune into GPB at 10:00PM tonight for the airing of Awake, My Soul

One of my favorite things about blogging is the opportunity to highlight great things that people I know are doing. I've done this on a handful of occasions and hope to do it more often. Today is another opportunity and it strikes close to home.

My brother Matt Hinton is quite the Renaissance man. He teaches at Morehouse College, also teaches classes to home schooled kids, restores and sells antique home fixtures, is a musician, and is now a rising filmmaker along with his wife Erica.

"We have been working on a documentary film about Sacred Harp (shape-note) singing for the past seven years or so and it is finally complete!

For those who live in Georgia, it will be aired on GPB (Channel 8) on November 13 at 10:00 pm. (It will also air again the following Thursday at midnight and again the following Sunday night at 1:00 am.) Please support us by turning on your television. The better our ratings, the better our chances are of a nationwide broadcast.

Also, you can really support us by buying the extended version (featuring an additional 20 minutes that will not be aired) on DVD from the our website. They make great Christmas gifts."

I am of course biased but this documentary is outstanding. Think "Ken Burns" quality with a focus on an authentic Southern art-form. It is also a very nice change to see a depiction of rural Southerners in a positive light.

You can check out their website for the trailer. And for those of you in Georgia, don't forget to tune into GPB next Monday night.

Reflections on Abortion and Compassion

I recently noticed a comment that someone left regarding my post on the Religious Right that I felt might be good to address. While I am generally not one to shy away from controversial topics, I have never written about one of the biggies: abortion. Considering my background and experiences, I suppose that it is strange that I have never written about abortion. But I have always considered it one of those topics where few people are ever convinced by arguments. So I don't have high hopes of changing anyone's mind but I do hope to give a different perspective on the issue.
