A Sociologist Reviews UnChristian
A Sociologist Reviews UnChristian Published at July 21, 2008 in Church. 1 Comment Brad Wright is associate professor at the University of Connecticut where he studies the sociology of Christianity. I enjoy reading Brad’s blog which offers up an interesting mixture of sociological analysis, Christian reflections, great photography and just plain fun. Brad has written an excellent 13-part review of the recently published book, UnChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Chri
Evangelicals Not Much Better Than Prostitutes
Jim Henderson in the latest “Off the Map” newsletter noted that only prostitutes rank lower than evangelicals in terms of respect in the mind of the public. He quotes the following: “The primary reason outsiders feel hostile toward Christians, and especially conservative Christians, is not because of any specific theological perspective. What they react negatively to is our ’swagger,’ how we go about things and the sense of self-importance we project.” —UnChristian, David Kinnaman “Most peop
unChristian: A New Generation’s Thoughts on Christianity
unChristian: A New Generation’s Thoughts on Christianity July 17th, 2008 · Comments Off I’m thrilled with the push for Christian authors who are finally engaging the fact that we live in a postmodern world and need to re-think our paradigms of faith and culture in light of those facts... But the book unChristian by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons brings something unique to the discussion: cold, hard data. Comments OffTags: Uncategorized
Sabbatical thoughts, Part I
Sabbatical thoughts, Part I The question was asked earlier today if watching the Ellen Show is how I am spending my sabbatical… well, not exactly. But I do think I must meet Ms. Gladys Hardy of Austin, TX. I feel confident we would have some fun together. In addition to traveling to places like Charleston, SC, Albuquerque and Seattle to visit churches, I have established a reading list. As of today, here is that list: A Generous Orthodoxy, McLaren unChristian, Kinnaman The Shack, You
Christians the New Pharisees?
"For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." -Mt. 5:20 Jesus could be pretty harsh sometimes. He was no pushover and he wasn't there to tickle people's ears by telling them what they wanted to hear. But when Jesus laid down the smack it was almost always towards his own people--his fellow Jewish religious types. Jesus says that to enter into the Kingdom of heaven our righteousnes
on vacation, reality, and reading
and we’re back… i would say that i feel refreshed and ready to take on the world, but i actually have something of a dull headache and it took less than a half hour before i was reminded why i look forward to vacations… at least i remembered not to punch the wall too hard so that i can’t type or anything like that… anyway, let’s get back into it, shall we? STAY-CATION to the tune of Permanent Vacation - Aerosmith oh how nice it would be if i could just check out from the corporate world a
the difference between a pencil and a pen
I just finished reading flashbang. I think this is one of the better books on Christianity that I’ve read in the last couple years. I really think anyone who enjoyed Velvet Elvis, unChristian, or Blue Like Jazz should really take a look at this book. Steele has a way of penetrating through human emotional defenses and sincerely communicating what God has put on his heart. He uses humorous experiences from his own life as metaphors for spiritual experiences. This is one of the few books that I
Orlando, Epcot, and Christian Booksellers
I’m in Orlando for a couple of days for the International Christian Retail Show, which is put on by the Christian Booksellers Association. A few highlights from today: - Gabe Lyons and Dave Kinnaman were the featured speakers at this morning’s general session for all attendees. Plus they were on the cover of the daily ICRS Newspaper. I have secured several copies for my friends in Atlanta…… - UnChristian has now sold over 100,000 copies in 11 months. This is pretty incredible. When Gabe and
Day One ICRS or CBA or Whatever . . .
Monday — CBA It was the first official day of the International Christian Retail Show (they really need to come up with a more creative name!) and Sherry and I got there in time to start on the exhibit floor. Of course, we have just come from the Book Expo America and the comparison was inevitable. The ICRS is about one fourth the size of the BEA. But, after two and half hours we only covered six aisles on the exhibit floor. Our first book signing came from Gary Chapman, author of the
Worldview - Biblical or Not?
Worldview - Biblical or Not? Posted on July 14, 2008 by sheyduck Adam Hamilton posted a couple weeks ago about a “Biblical Worldview.” He cites Dave Kinnaman’s work in unChristian, which discusses the Barna Group’s research finding which “showed only 4% of adults have a biblical worldview as the basis of their decision-making.” Barna defines a “Biblical Worldview” in this way: For the purposes of the research, a biblical worldview was defined as believing that absolute moral truths exist;
Currently…
Currently listening: Mark Driscoll sermon on tongues and prophecy (Sesame Street in the background) Currently eating: Baked Lays and a key lime pie Yoplait Whips Currently reading: Unchristian by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons, along with Acts Currently thinking: will I ever stop eating?… how is David’s staff meeting going?… why are my children never ever content?… why is REM on Sesame Street?… I need to order the boys’ beds… I need to clean the living room… why will my new bread machine mak
What Would Jesus Read… on the beach!
On July 5th, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune published a list of “beach reading with a purpose… what’s hot at religious bookstores.” Take a gander and let me know if you’ve read any yet! I’ll start with their fiction picks… For Adults: The Shack by William P. Young A man returns to the abandoned cabin where his daughter was murderered. “It’s really not a Christian book… just a book that is based on an interesting theological premise,” according to Tim Franklin the manager of Northwestern B
ICRS: Day 0
Though ICRS formally gets underway Monday morning at 9 AM, the Sunday before the show is always full of important events. For that reason, I left Austin a day early and took a direct flight from Austin to Orlando (thank you JetBlue!) yesterday afternoon. I got into Orlando about 7:30 PM, checked into the hotel, grabbed dinner and watched SportsCenter before drifting off to sleep. Since we have a nine month old at home, I appreciated every minute of sleep that was available to me. This year I a
Life Motto
A friend of mine sent me his life’s mission statement/mantra, or whatever you want to call it, and challenged me to write one of my onw. I’ve been thinking about for weeks. But this morning I ran across a quote in the book UnChristian by David Kinnaman, and it resonated with what i want my life to be: My goal is to be an “effective agent of spiritual transformation in people’s lives, whatever that may cost in time, comfort, or image.” I want my life, my work, my family and my hobbies to all
Myth-buster
I have started reading unChristian by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons. It started out slow with alot of statistics, but now in chapter 4: Get Saved, it is starting to pick up. In this chapter Kinnaman addresses some misconceptions. Misconceptions not about Christianity from outsiders ("outsiders" is how Kinneman refers to those not of the Christian faith), but misconceptions about Outsiders from Christians. He says, "These misconceptions enable Christians to be in a state of denial about their
Being Offended
Man....I just stopped in my tracks as I was reading "Unchristian" and the subject I'm on is NOT BEING OFFENDED WHOA ok so I thought to myself a lot of the problems the world has are not problems with others they are problems within ourselves. We have to recognize in our everyday lives that we have to deal with people on a daily. In dealing with people we grow to learn more about ourselves in our own personal lives. I've realized a lot lately that I've become more sensitive to my thoughts and ho
onepoint, twopoint, threepoint: concept posts
the threepoint kernel: first in a series on a new way to do mission We demarcate “generations” in life and in tech. According to David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons, authors of unchristian: what a new generation really thinks about Christianity... and why it matters, “…identifying a ‘generation’ is an analytical tool for understanding our culture and the people within it. It simply reflects the idea that people who are born over a certain period of time are influenced by a unique set of circumstance
UnChristian (3)
My thanks to Nathan Tiemeyer and Every Square Inch for the following: "More highlights from David Kinnaman’s arresting new book unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks About Christianity, this time from chapter 4, “Get Saved.” After a few introductory paragraphs, Kinnaman details a several myths associated with reaching people with the gospel that the Barna group has uncovered in their
There is an answer...
All men have a bend towards sin, but there is an answer... from Unchristian by David Kinnaman: "No one goes to heaven because of what they do or do not do. Every human sins, and we all deserve Hell for that. But Jesus freely offers everyone his grace. ...homosexual behavior is sin, but it is no different than if I sleep with someone other than my wife or even momentarily have a sexual fantasy. God created sexuality, it is good, but it can expressed in wrong ways. Every one of us, gay
